Last week I started discussing “Acknowledgment” of emotions in the moment and how I use this tool to assist me in “Riding the Waves” in my daily life. It’s important to remember this is just a step in my process, so as a whole sequence, I find it beneficial. I hope what I share gives you a new perspective to help you discover your own tools for realigning and reconnecting with self.
To recap from last week, I shared with you my experiences and perspective of living in a world where our emotions or lack of them have the potential to rule our lives. From my personal experience and from what I have discovered from my clients and general interactions is, there are 3 basic categories of people in relation to emotions. Those who completely shut emotions down and keep them buried in Pandora’s Box. Those who get too caught up in their emotions to the point their life can appear to be in chaos or full of dramas. Lastly, those who have found their own way to Ride the Wave of their emotions in a more balanced and controlled manner.

Maybe you shift between them, as I did over the years.
For me, I find there is power in the Acknowledgement because it’s my middle path when dealing with my emotions. Through trial after trial (I was tempted to use the word error, yet I know there are never any errors in life) I have tested myself. In the early days I was very unaware. I didn’t know how to manage them, so I relied on autopilot reacting. I used the Pandora’s Box method where nobody could sense my internal sufferings, sometimes I wasn’t even aware, ultimately, not helpful. I also used the other extreme where my emotions could control my life, also, in the long and short term, not helpful. I would go between the two, depending on the emotional trigger.
These were subconscious patterns of behaviour I had developed which just kicked themselves in to action, without me consciously doing anything. I simply reacted as a brick or with an emotional outburst. Though mostly these outbursts and breakdowns were in private.
Now being more aware, I can clearly see how disempowering both of these approaches were and I am very appreciative for the opportunity to learn and grow from them. Through my experiences and personal transformation, I understand how I was holding myself back from my potential by acting in these ways. Yet at the time, I knew no different and did the best I knew to cope.
You can read about these things in many booked and be told by many teachers, yet the lesson only takes hold at the precise moment you are ready to receive it. This is when you “wake up” or become “conscious”. This is when you get the “I get it” or “light bulb” turn on.
We all have so much programing set up beneath the surface and have so many influences in our lives, to live your true potential and value your worth takes courage and consistent dedication. This is because we are trained to hold ourselves back from who we really are. We are not in sync with our totality as beautiful beings of pure love and light.
My life has been forced to slow down and dig deep over many years now, where I have been challenged to live outside the square and rediscover who I am and why I am here. So this journey has definitely forced me to confront my conscious programing and brought to light subconscious behaviour and thought patterns which no longer served me. Many times I struggled as my autopilot went to take hold and I had to catch it and face it. Prove to myself this was not helpful and I had to handle things differently. It was brutal at times because it cut me to my core, broke my foundations and my world came crashing down. Yet I grew in strength and determination from within to be all I came here to be and nothing less.
This is where I really started to understand the importance of and implementing “Accepting” and “Acknowledging” my emotions “In the Moment”. For example: when I have felt disappointment, like I did today. I could not deny I felt it, whether it was justified or not, it was there. So there was no point trying to hide it, because in that moment, I was experiencing it, so it was real. There was also no reason to indulge in the emotion, judge it, place my attention on it and letting it escalate to a point I felt even worse. This is just painful and an act of self-punishment. So I simply accepted and acknowledged it.
It pressed at me for a while until it no longer held any power and it dissipated. Now this particular feeling came from an event with a deep trigger, it had the potential to be emotionally draining and painful. Yet I am very proud of myself for being able to manage it quite calmly.
So what did I do? I told myself this is just an old program. It is not relevant anymore and I no longer have to react in the old way. I am capable of taking an empowered response now. I have to tools, now it’s time to implement them.
I put on some uplifting music, I started to search my mind for happy memories to make me smile. I found things to become excited about. I did some cooking. As a whole, these new actions created enough power to override my disappointment.
As you can see, I didn’t pretend the emotion of disappointment wasn’t there, hence keeping it still within and I didn’t play the “drama queen” with it either. I simply CHOSE not to let it control me and ruin my day. I let it run its course to release.
The process is very simple, it’s the implementing which is challenging. It is constant daily practice. Being vigilant of your words, thoughts and actions. With time, it does get easier.
In summary, the Acknowledgement of emotions can be of benefit as it allows you the ability to take responsibility for your life. When you can start to take control and choose how you respond to life instead of reacting to it. You have the power to create your own world. You are the MASTER of your own universe. THIS IS WHAT WE CAME HERE TO BE!
