How I’ve learnt to ride the Wave. Pt. 24 INDENTIFY YOUR BEHAVIOUR PATTERNS!

I must say, my week has been an interesting one with some unexpected surprises presenting, confirming the next steps in my path. I love it when this happens!

Why? Because it means I am allowing my life to flow with more ease more often. It proves I am living more aware and taking back my power to choose the experiences I create. The rewards for allowing the flow, other than more peace of mind and trust daily are these lovely surprises. So yes, I test and practice what I teach. 🙂

In my last 2 notes I briefly mentioned the many hidden “programs, patterns and beliefs” stored within our being, which direct our words, thoughts and actions in each moment. I highlighted how these outdated hidden programs, patterns and beliefs hold us back in life, keeping us stuck and living life small. Or barely living, merely existing.

  • So did you do your homework?
  • Have you made the conscious choice to love yourself enough to begin taking notice of the words you speak and the thoughts you think, with the understanding what you send out is what you get back?
  • What have you discovered?
  • Could you identify if your thoughts and words are generally more optimistic or pessimistic?
  • Were you able to make adjustments when required?

This week I will address the 3rd component, your actions. As with the words you speak and the thoughts you generate, your actions also impact how you experience the world. Your actions can tell you a lot about how you perceive yourself and your world if you take the time to notice. They can show you where you limit your life or allow it to flow.

For the most part, many people don’t really consider the actions they take, they simply do what they have always done. They do what they know (because it’s safe, easy or comfortable) or they don’t change it due to fears based around things like expectations or judgement. Whatever the reason, when you neglect to pay attention you miss the opportunity to grow and expand. You can trap yourself in cycles and patterns of behaviour which do not serve who you are today. What served you in the past may not serve you now.

Let’s look at a couple of common examples:

A situation has taken place, your emotions have already taken hold and you can already see yourself going for the ice-cream, chocolate or fast food. Or the cigarette is calling you or the just one beer, turns into two, three or four.

These are examples of autopilot reactions to cope with events which create negative emotions. These are what you use as “coping mechanisms” for things like stress, anger, frustration and anxiety. When you don’t feel good about yourself, you seek comfort or relief. Even when you are aware some actions are not good for you overall, you cannot help but follow the urge.

It’s at this point you need to catch yourself and ask

  • What am I running away from?”
  • What am I trying to bury or hide from?’
  • What do I not want to face and why?”

This is your moment to step up and make the conscious choice to create change. Catch yourself in the behaviour, question the true depth of it and then break the cycle.

Here is another example:

You experience a relationship break up and you put your walls up and pretend like nothing has happened and you are not effected at all or you are so broken and lost you jump on the next person who pays you any attention. Can you relate?

In general, if you can see this in your life, these are behaviour patterns used to cover your true issues. The core of your suffering and long held beliefs. They are used to disguise what is taking place beneath the surface. For example, maybe you hold beliefs about rejection, abandonment or being alone. Or you are not good enough, worthy enough or deserving. So the behaviour pattern acts as a mask to the real cause of the actions.

There are so many reasons we all have for holding ourselves back, yet in ultimate truth, we are loved unconditionally and born to love abundant lives. So while we find the excuses to justify our actions, we are choosing to live our lives against the natural flow of life. This creates the bumpy ride and the extreme high and low experiences.

  • Do you know your patterns?
  • This week I ask you to look at the patterns in your life. Can you identify unhealthy and unloving behaviours you partake in?
  • Are you able to see the triggers to the actions and discover the deeper cause?

For once you recognize the trigger, you have the power and control to change the action. In essence, you reprogram yourself to more beneficial behaviours. More uplifting and self-nurturing based.

As you know, the only way to change your life is to change yourself. If you are unable to pinpoint you own limitations through increasing your awareness, you will prevent yourself from experiencing a fully enriched and empowered life, where you are in control through the conscious choices you make.

So I encourage you to give yourself permission to dig deep and take charge of your life. It may be painful at times to face what you have been running or hiding from, however, once you acknowledge and accept it, you can move past it. This is where you give yourself the opportunity to love yourself and your life more.

See how you go and most importantly, be gentle and kind to yourself. Change takes time, yet it can only start with the first step.
