In last week’s note I wrapped up the basics of my first step of Riding the Wave, ACCEPTING WHAT IS (in the moment). This week I will start explaining the concept of “IN THE MOMENT”, as it applies to me. I hope over the coming weeks you find the tool of being aware “IN THE MOMENT” helpful and can incorporate it into your daily life.
You may have heard the term “In the Moment” or being “Present” before, yet have you implemented the concept? Do you understand what it is and the importance of it as a tool to help you Ride the Wave of your earthly experience.
There are many opinions about this topic, yet I will just speak from my experience, as this is what is true and real for me. You will have your own unique experience with it also.
So my understanding of “In the Moment” is being in full awareness of what is taking place within your internal and external world. How you feel, what you are thinking and how you are behaving right now. The power behind being aware “In the Moment” is the ability to take charge of your responses and not simply reacting. Therefore, enabling yourself to make conscious decisions about how you choose to live the experience.
It’s important to note, when I have previously referred in my notes to Accepting What It and now extending further to, In the Moment, it is all impermanent. Life is in a constant state of change. So where you are and what you are experiencing now will not last forever. As much as we create a drama stating it will be and at times, drowning in our own sorrow and victimhood, being in a constant state of change is a universal law, so it’s not possible to always remain the same. It’s important to remember this, especially when you are experiencing less desirable situations, feelings or emotions. Know they will pass. You just have to find the tools appropriate for you to “Ride the Wave!”
For years I read about and attempted to practice the art of being “In the Moment”, sometimes it was successful and other times, I was so far away from it I created unnecessary stress and worry on myself and others. Reliving the past and putting too much emphasis on the future, I missed what was happening right now. I didn’t have the awareness to see what I was doing. I wanted things to be different to how they actually were, so it created unhappiness and played the same old story, over and over again (lucky I have tolerant friends). This in turn impacted my health, relationships etc. So being ‘In the Moment”, as with Accepting What Is, takes time to Master. It’s a habit which needs to be cultivated.
Let me give you an example of how I am using Accepting What Is, In the Moment right now. So as I am typing this I am feeling a little tired, my eyes are heavy and my body a bit weak (recovering from an illness and cosmic influences), I am a bit over stimulated as I am putting this together at a busy airport and I am thinking about how best to express what I want to say to expand your awareness, to be of service to you. So in brief, this is what is taking place for me at this very moment.
Now for me. Ideally I would love to be in full health, in a quiet place looking at a garden or ocean where the only other sounds I hear are from nature, with my thoughts undisturbed. As you can see, I’m in the exact opposite.
So I have a choice. I know what is truth right now, I am aware of my preference, so now it’s up to me to decide how to respond, “In this Moment”.
The old Tracy would be very irritable and annoyed, unable to focus on this note and be having a truly disempowering experience. Most likely feeling sorry for myself. However, I have chosen to embrace the chaos around me and not let it take over me. You see, I understand this moment is as it is and it will potentially be this way for the next 11 hours as I go between flights and airports. Right now, this is my truth, my reality so to say.
However, I also realise each moment is impermanent. For life is always changing, so where I am and how I am feeling will not last. I am not going to be in this airport for the rest of my life, surrounded by travellers, queues and coffee machines grinding beans. I know come tomorrow, I can let my body rest again, I will be in a more quiet place and my mind will be calmer – holiday mode J. So what can I do now though!!
Well, I have chosen to somewhat challenge myself. Show myself how focused I can be by not allowing what is happening in my external environment to impact me as it used to. This includes my physical ailments. To my surprise, my experience has become quite uplifting. I have accepted what is in this moment and through this, I have dropped my resistance to the situation. This creates a softening of body, mind and soul, which is allowing me to type with a sense of ease and joy.
When you start to look at how you automatically react in life, it’s at those points you can take your power back and choose how to respond instead. Crap happens and sometimes if feels there is little we can do about it. It happens to us all. What I can tell you is, when you begin to do your inner work, peeling back the onion layers one at a time, to start with, more crap rises to the surface, yet you get stronger through the process. Each layer shed is a step closer to remembering the beautiful, powerful, abundant and infinite being which you are. There are no exceptions!!
So this is just my first little insight to being “In the Moment” as it relates to Accepting What Is. When you start working with these two concepts, it opens the door to profound life changes. You can learn more about yourself, your unhealthy patterns, see where you resist and hold yourself back. As you see what holds you back, you can take charge to move yourself forward. No one can do it for you.
We are all walking the journey of self-discovery, so lets also benefit others through our experiences in the process. Let me know your thoughts.
In the coming weeks I will expand on this, my experiences and other tools to help raise your awareness and assist your own expansion further.
